Diverging Diamond Temporary to Permanent Traffic Detection

The ability to easily adapt with construction makes Wavetronix SmartSensors the choice for South Carolina’s newest diverging diamond interchange.

Problem: Dangerous Intersection

The intersection at South Carolina 290 and I-85 in Duncan is currently hazardous, with frequent accidents that require police and fire department responses almost daily. The growing volume of traffic, including heavy truck traffic, adds to the danger.

Solution: Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI)

Duncan will soon have South Carolina's second Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI):

  • Design: Temporarily shifts traffic to the opposite side of the road to allow protected left-hand turns, fewer traffic lights, and improved traffic flow.
  • Benefits: Expected to significantly reduce accidents, increase safety, and handle growing traffic from Duncan’s booming population.

Technology: Wavetronix Sensors

  • The SC Department of Transportation selected Wavetronix sensors for traffic management during the six-phase construction.
  • Advantages:
    • Easy to install and adjust.
    • Above-ground placement avoids repeated digging and delays.
    • Ideal for shifting lane configurations during construction.
  • Compared to in-ground loops, Wavetronix is more flexible and efficient.

Local Impact

  • The DDI has the potential to make Duncan safer and more accessible, reducing travel time for residents and visitors.
  • The Town Administrator and contractors anticipate happier citizens and smoother traffic, even during construction.
