LINDON, UT—The Utah Department of Transportation recently unveiled a sophisticated intersection that uses advance detection to increase motorist safety and improve traffic flow. The intersection features the Wavetronix SmartSensor Advance in combination with in-ground sensors from Sensys to monitor traffic as it approaches the intersection; the sensors then relay critical data to a signal controller that holds the light or triggers a change based on real-time conditions.

On September 27, 2008, UDOT introduced the technology to representatives of local media and explained the benefits of advance detection. According to Dave Kinnecom, director of UDOT's Traffic Operations Center, SmartSensor Advance will detect vehicles in the intersection dilemma zone, the area in which drivers must decide whether to stop suddenly or speed through the intersection when the light changes to yellow. When vehicles are detected in this zone, SmartSensor Advance will trigger the controller to hold the green until the cars have safely passed. Meanwhile, the Sensys devices will detect vehicles at the stop bar so drivers won't have to wait at a red light when there is no traffic.

"What we're trying to do is make [the intersections] as efficient as possible to minimize unnecessary stops and delays," Kinnecom told the media.

UDOT also announced that SmartSensor Advance will eventually be used at all high speed intersections on state roads where the posted speed limit is 40 MPH or greater.
