SmartSensor HD Deployed for Obama Inauguration
LINDON, Utah—January 14, 2009—Several portable SmartSensor HD stations will play an important role on Tuesday, January 20, supplying high definition traffic detection for the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama. Wavetronix recently rush-shipped 10 SmartSensor HD units for installation on portable, solar-powered trailers, which will be deployed along major arteries leading into the Washington DC area. The sensors will enable traffic operators to monitor traffic conditions in real time as they try to control the increased traffic flow expected for Tuesday’s historic event.
This current deployment is an extension of an earlier project. Last spring, six portable detection stations were installed for use by regional traffic management centers. The stations, part of a first-of-its-kind hurricane evacuation system, consist of a SmartSensor HD; a video camera; and a weather station, all installed on trailers from ASTI Transportation Systems, Inc., of Delaware.
Since then, the stations have been used for much more than just hurricane evacuation, and the system has proven so popular, area officials have decided to add an additional 10 stations. “The concept has been very successful, and the region has definitely recognized the benefits of portable, solar-powered traffic detection,†says Noah Jenkin, director of sales at ASTI.
In addition to real-time traffic detection, the data from SmartSensor HD will also be archived and used later for post-event analysis. “Planning officials will be able to use the data to determine future usage and funding needs, both for day-to-day traffic and for future events like this,†says Mike Rose, Wavetronix’ vice president of sales. “This will be enormously valuable information."
