LINDON, Utah—January 08, 2008—Nearly every transportation agency in the country is familiar with the data-disconnect that exists between ITS departments and planning data collection groups. While both groups require consistent accuracy, ITS needs real-time data and planning departments do not. Although the data itself is largely identical, these two groups often seem more at odds with each other, duplicating collection efforts and taking a possessive attitude rather than working in cooperation.
The most recent version of the Command DataCollector works to resolve this disconnect by gathering data from a growing library of both real-time and non-real-time traffic sensors and data logging tools. Reggie Gardner, chairman of the Command Product Management team, says DataCollector 2.2 allows these two disconnected groups to share sensor networks, giving them access to identical data while still allowing each department to maintain as much autonomy as they wish. “It really is DataCollector acting as a diplomat between these previously incompatible DOT functions,” Gardner says.
DataCollector 2.2 maintains an archive of 5-, 15- and 60-minute data aggregations and provides some of the basic reporting required by planning departments.
“The quality of data from sensors like SmartSensor HD has already allowed for ITS and planning to share a single device for both purposes,” explains Gardner. “DataCollector 2.2 further ties these two groups together by ensuring that the data being collected is consistent, accurate and completely free of the data gaps that have plagued planning groups for years.”
