LINDON, Utah—November 07, 2007—An innovative hurricane evacuation system is now operational in Alabama, and the Wavetronix SmartSensor is playing a vital role.
The Alabama Department of Transportation decided it needed to improve management of its Hurricane Evacuation I-65 Contra-Flow Operations and awarded the contract to Birmingham-based InLine Communications. The contractor chose Wavetronix to supply radar traffic sensors that will monitor vehicle volumes and speeds on northbound hurricane evacuation routes.
InLine designed and built a network that stretches from Mobile, on the Gulf Coast, to Montgomery—a distance of nearly 180 miles. The network provides real-time video and SmartSensor traffic data to the ALDOT Central Office; the 6th Division Headquarters in Montgomery; and the 9th Division Headquarters offices in Mobile.
Currently, seven SmartSensors have been installed along the evacuation corridor; Wavetronix Command data appliances in ALDOT's planning department will be shared with the system so that real-time traffic data can be collected and analyzed during emergencies.
