PROVO, Utah—June 12, 2003—Wavetronix LLC, the world leader in Digital Wave Radar™ traffic sensors, has been awarded a patent for the ITS industry's only auto-calibrating and auto-configuring traffic detection system.
The U.S. Patent Office has assigned Patent No. 6,556,916 to Wavetronix's method for defining traffic lanes without requiring manual set-up of lane boundaries. The innovative system employs the SmartSensor™, which utilizes Digital Wave Radar technology to accurately detect vehicle speed, volume and occupancy in up to eight lanes simultaneously. SmartSensor installs above ground, calibrates and configures automatically and provides immediate visual confirmation of lane position, vehicle detection and traffic direction.
"We are really pleased with the scope of this patent and the position it gives us in the ITS market," says Dr. David Arnold, co-founder and CEO of Wavetronix. "This patent reinforces our position as a leader in traffic radar technology, and Wavetronix will continue to develop cutting edge technology in pursuit of safer, more efficient roadways."
The innovative system is remotely manageable and IP addressable, allowing users to make quick adjustments to lane boundaries that change due to weather, road construction and maintenance, lane re-assignment and other traffic disturbances. According to Dr. Arnold, the Wavetronix system responds to a need in the ITS industry for reconfigurable sensors.
"The cost to configure and reconfigure sensors can be considerable, and it often leads to traffic disruptions that may result in commuter delays and diminished public safety," Dr. Arnold says. "Our automated process reduces installation and maintenance costs, improves traffic control and consistently provides the most accurate traffic data under any conditions."
