LINDON, Utah—June 03, 2007—Wavetronix LLC, the world leader in patented Digital Wave Radar™ traffic sensors, is pleased to announce that the deployment of more than 1,100 SmartSensors™ along the Florida Turnpike is nearing completion. Company officials call this one of the largest sensor deployments in ITS history, creating one of the largest continuous detection corridors in the United States.
The Florida Turnpike (State Road 91) is a 312-mile long toll corridor that stretches from Florida City in Miami-Dade County to Wildwood in Sumter County. SmartSensors are being installed every one-third- to one-half-mile to collect real-time vehicle volume, occupancy and average speed data as part of a statewide ITS initiative. The turnpike deployments are a combination of six separate projects that are being overseen by three different contractors; Wavetronix secured these orders through the combined efforts of its Florida sales office and South Atlantic Traffic Corporation.
Wavetronix faced intense competition for the opportunity to provide the turnpike with vehicle detection technology. Cliff Joyner, a senior sales manager in Wavetronix' Florida office, was instrumental in securing these orders for Wavetronix. He calls the Florida Turnpike a good example of a project that is viewed as an investment in technology and long-term results. “This was not a bidding war decided solely on price,” Joyner says. “Instead it reflects the state of Florida's desire to utilize a level and type of detection technology that matches its forward-looking approach to intelligent transportation.”
Michael Rose, Wavetronix' vice-president of sales and marketing, agrees and adds that Wavetronix is proud to be contributing to a project of this scope. “The state of Florida is committed to improving the efficiency of its roadways by employing the best technologies available,” says Rose. “Wavetronix is confident that SmartSensor will provide the turnpike with the highest quality data and the level of consistent accuracy it requires.”
The Florida Turnpike projects bring the total number of SmartSensors deployed in Florida to over 2,000, making Florida the state with the greatest number of active SmartSensor installations. For more information about Wavetronix and the SmartSensor, please visit www.wavetronix.com.
