LINDON, Utah—December 05, 2005—Wavetronix LLC, the world leader in patented Digital Wave Radar™ traffic sensors, has announced the first permanent installation of the new SmartSensor Advance™ device. The city of Scottsdale, Arizona, will use the innovative new sensor for intersection dilemma zone management in an effort to reduce the number of intersection-related accidents.
Scottsdale ITS analyst Bruce Dressel says the Advance sensors have been installed on the city's north side at the intersection of Pima Road and Westland Drive. SmartSensor Advance uses patented Digital Wave Radar technology to detect vehicles for dilemma zone and intersection control applications. The dilemma zone is the area near the intersection where a driver, when faced with a yellow light, must decide whether to stop quickly and risk a collision with the vehicle behind, or proceed through the light and risk an accident in the intersection. Dressel says SmartSensor Advance will monitor the presence and speed of vehicles approaching the intersection, and will extend the green light for the intersection's high speed approaches if traffic is heavy or if vehicles are detected in the dilemma zone.
“Our primary goal is to reduce accidents by allowing the high speed approaches more time, when needed, to clear the intersection,” Dressel says. “We hope this technology helps reduce the severity of accidents, and eliminates the incidence of angle accidents.”
Dressel says if the current SmartSensor Advance installation operates as intended, the city will consider future installations in other parts of Scottsdale. The SmartSensor Advance is designed and manufactured by Wavetronix, and is one of the only patented auto-configuring devices in the intelligent transportation industry. Wavetronix is represented in the Scottsdale project by Al Valdez at J & J Inc. of Chino, California, an authorized Wavetronix dealer.
