ITIP2.com provides visitors a brief history of the Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure Program and lets them know how they can take advantage of recent changes. Visitors may also sign up for a newsletter which will notify them of news and announcements. Both the website and the newsletter are produced as free services from Wavetronix and are not endorsed by the Federal Highway Administration, which oversees implementation of the program.
“Provisions of the new act give companies like ours the opportunity to compete competitively in some of our country's most heavily congested cities,” says David Arnold, CEO and co-founder of Wavetronix. “We've created ITIP2.com to help educate officials in those cities about these opportunities and to encourage their participation.”
The Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure Program is a federal initiative for ITS data collection, integration and distribution. It was created in 1998 as part of the TEA-21 legislation to encourage heavily congested cities to use intelligent transportation systems by offering federal money for system implementation. The provision earmarked $2 million for each of several pre-selected metropolitan areas, but it also created a single-source monopoly by identifying Traffic.com as the sole technology supplier. Under the SAFETEA: LU act, passed into law on August 10, 2005, ITIP Part 2 eliminates this single source monopoly, expands the number of cities eligible for the program and allows those cities to choose the ITS system they want to use through a competitive bid process.
