Wavetronix Unveils Innovative New Sensor

Radar stop bar detector named a finalist for Best of ITS.

PROVO, Utah—May 03, 2010—Wavetronix LLC, the worldwide market leader in radar traffic detection and monitoring, has chosen the 2010 ITS America exhibition in Houston as the venue for the official debut of SmartSensor Matrix, the world’s first non-intrusive, multi-lane radar device designed specifically for intersection stop bar detection. Currently, the sensor is being installed at intersections throughout the United States, and its performance is already gaining national recognition, including being named a finalist for the 2010 Best of ITS awards at ITS America.

“Wavetronix is very excited to introduce SmartSensor Matrix, the first significant technology release in the intersection detection segment in more than 12 years,” says Mike Rose, VP of Sales at Wavetronix.

Each SmartSensor Matrix generates 16 separate high-resolution radar beams to create a 90-degree field of view with a 100-foot radius; this field of view is used to create a high-contrast, two-dimensional image of an approach that tracks vehicles, distinguishes lanes and accurately detects the presence of vehicles at the stop bar. This revolutionary detection method is accurate in all weather and lighting conditions and is being marketed as Radar Vision.

“Matrix leverages proven Wavetronix technologies, like true high definition Digital Wave Radar, for effective intersection detection and control,” Rose says. “With Radar Vision, Matrix offers significant detection improvements over video and is a formidable alternative to loops at the intersection.”

A number of transportation agencies across the country have already discovered the benefits of Radar Vision. The Utah Department of Transportation has several SmartSensor Matrix units in operation and has found that it greatly improves intersection efficiency by reducing traditional vehicle passage times of two to three seconds to less than one second. Just recently, officials in Fort Worth, Texas, submitted an initial order for 78 sensors to be installed as part of a project that will eventually included hundreds of intersections throughout the city. Wavetronix is represented in the project by Twincrest Technologies of Mansfield, Texas, an authorized Wavetronix distributor.

Based on its performance, SmartSensor Matrix was nominated for the Best of ITS New Innovative Product award, and it was named a finalist by ITS America on April 2, 2010. “It is an honor to have the advanced technologies in SmartSensor Matrix recognized in this way,” says

Rose. “Matrix represents a giant leap forward and we believe the benefits of Radar Vision will have a great impact on intersection detection.”
