PROVO, Utah—March 23, 2010—An ambitious road improvement project in north-central Texas is using the Command DataCollector and SmartSensor HD to monitor construction-related traffic conditions. The sensors have been installed as part of the North Tarrant Express, a public-private partnership aimed at improving the efficiency of the highway corridor that runs east-west through the Dallas-Fort Worth region of Tarrant County.
Ten SmartSensor HD units have been deployed at various points along the 13-mile stretch of highway that makes up the NTE project. SmartSensor HD was selected to monitor traffic volumes and vehicle speeds because Texas officials are familiar with the sensor and were confident, from past experience, that SmartSensor HD was the best unit to meet their needs.
In addition, DataCollector has been installed to automatically collect traffic data from the sensors and make it available to multiple users. The project requires accurate and reliable data, so DataCollector’s ability to retrieve data that may be missing due to unreliable communications was especially attractive. Wavetronix is represented in the project by Twincrest Technologies of Mansfield, Texas, an authorized Wavetronix distributor.
The North Tarrant Express is part of a comprehensive agreement between the Texas Department of Transportation and NTE Mobility Partners, LLC. The project consists of a series of improvements to critical highways in one of Texas’ fastest growing regions, giving drivers the choice of bypassing congestion by traveling in high-speed managed lanes; also several interchanges will be reconstructed and existing toll-free facilities will be upgraded. Construction should begin in late 2010 and is scheduled for completion in 2015.
