PROVO, Utah—February 11, 2010—A third SmartSensor device has been evaluated and approved for sale in the state of Florida. In a letter dated 2 February 2010, Florida State traffic engineer Mark C. Wilson, P.E., notified Wavetronix that, in accordance with state statutes, SmartSensor Advance “has been evaluated, approved, and placed on the…Approved Product List” for dilemma zone protection applications.
State laws require all contractors, manufacturers or suppliers to gain approval before selling or installing transportation devices in Florida. The approval process consists of three steps: first, companies must become “qualified vendors” by submitting a FDOT Quality Assurance Evaluation Survey; next, qualifying vendors are asked to submit an APL application; and finally, products are evaluated to verify they meet FDOT standards. Products that meet the department’s specifications are added to the APL for a period of two years.
SmartSensor Advance units were installed at an intersection in Tallahassee and were evaluated by the Traffic Engineering Research Lab and the City of Tallahassee. Wavetronix was represented in the evaluation by Transportation Control Systems of Tampa, an authorized Wavetronix dealer.
Both SmartSensor HD and the original SmartSensor 105 were evaluated and added to the list in 2008. Florida officials stress that inclusion on the Approved Product List is not an endorsement of any product, nor does it represent FDOT’s preference for one product over another.
