PROVO, Utah—April 05, 2004—Wavetronix LLC, the world leader in patented Digital Wave Radar™ traffic sensors, has received final approval from the New York State Department of Transportation to ship several SmartSensor devices for deployment in two major New York ITS projects.
The New York State DOT approved the SmartSensor following a long verification and validation process. Wavetronix received notification of the state's approval on February 2, 2004, and is shipping SmartSensors for deployment along New York City's Whitestone Expressway and Grand Central Parkway.
"This marks a major turning point for us," says Mike Rose, director of sales and marketing for Wavetronix. Rose says the company has now received approval from New York, Florida, Texas and California, identified by Wavetronix as the four most active ITS states in the country. "Approval in New York was important for us because a lot of the industry looks to New York as a good example of active ITS implementation."
The two New York ITS projects were designed by the New York City office of Edwards and Kelcey; engineers from the firm also assisted the state in evaluating the sensors. The first project involves the installation of 85 sensors along the Grand Central Parkway by Hellman Electric Corp. from Bronx, New York. The second project requires 12 SmartSensors which are being installed along the Whitestone Expressway by Welsbach Electric Corp., a subsidiary of EMCOR Group and one of the largest electrical contractors in New York. Wavetronix is represented in the project by Marbelite Co., Inc. of Manasquan, New Jersey, an authorized Wavetronix dealer.
SmartSensor uses patented Digital Wave Radar technology to detect vehicle volume, occupancy and speed in up to eight lanes of traffic, and is the only device in the ITS industry with a patented auto-configuration and auto-calibration process.
